Research Office weekly blog: Mobilising evidence to improve patient care

By Daniel Livesey & Rosalind McNally, Health, Information & Resource Library (HIRL) team at Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust

HIRL

The HIRL is a combined Library and Health Promotion Resource Service based within Manchester Mental Health & Social Care Trust. We are based at Fallowfield Library and provide services to Trust staff and public health workers based in Manchester.

A Week in the Life of HIRL

We have been out and about delivering training to Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council Public Health Team, who we have a contract with to deliver NHS Library and Knowledge Services (LKS). All workers for the NHS need to be able to access a good evidence-base for patient care, research, education and commissioning. We conduct searching skills training using Evidence Services provided by NICE.

We are also busy collecting data currently on the impact of our services for our annual quality improvement frameworks, the Library Quality Assurance Framework (LQAF). We have been out interviewing staff this week as well as regular work of updating websites for the Health Information & Resources Library and Research and Innovation as MAHSC lead mental health partner, Manchester Mental Health & Social Care Trust.

This week the Library Services Manager has attended a Service Transformation Work stream meeting for Knowledge for Healthcare. The framework has provided a basis for shaping the future of national NHS LKS and over the course of the next few years, developments will be made so that the provision of knowledge, information and evidence continues to evolve.

Members of the Team have been busy engaging with public health promotion staff across the City ensuring they have the resources they need to deliver events and local and national targets. They do this by providing users with a range of leaflets and models.
As Outreach Librarian, I pick up unmet information needs at the point of care; and through our literature searches for patient care, service redesign and governance, we mobilise the research evidence so it can be translated into the context of live problems faced by front-line staff. As more resources move online, professional librarians, most of whom are Chartered or Accredited with CILIP, are responding. We share good practice through the North West Clinical Librarians and Trainers Groups.
