Successful application to the MAHSC Improvement Science for Academics programme for a project to implement a point of care blood pregnancy testing service for use in Emergency Departments (EDs)
Some people admitted to an Emergency Department (EDs) need to undergo a pregnancy test before they can be treated or scanned to avoid harm to an unborn child.
This causes a raft of problems in EDs due to difficulties carrying out urine tests in major trauma situations and delays to CT scans due to concerns over pregnancy. The MAHSC Inflammation and Repair domain aims to create a new device that can rapidly and reliably identify pregnant patients through a simple blood test. This will permit more timely radiological imaging – such as X-rays and scans – with very positive implications for major trauma patients in EDs; and will promote effective patient flow through the ED.
