In April 2014, Rebecca attended the first Manchester Psoriasis Shout Out® - a week of events led by The Manchester Centre for Dermatology Research that encouraged patients to speak out about their condition and engage with doctors, researchers, fellow sufferers and the general public.
Sometimes my psoriasis was so severe, I had it all over my body apart from my neck. A couple of treatments worked in short bursts, but nothing really gave me consistent relief and I’ve been hospitalised a few times.
By 2014, over 20 years from my diagnosis, the condition was so bad my scalp was thick with psoriasis scales, and I’d pretty much given up on treatment. Then I joined Twitter and, on a whim, decided to search #psoriasis. That’s how I found out about the Shout Out, and it changed my life.
I’d never met anyone with psoriasis except my Mum, but at the Shout Out I met other sufferers who understood exactly what I was going through. I had no idea about all the research into the condition, either, and it was inspiring that so many people were passionate about helping people like me.
My consultant admitted me to hospital not long afterwards, but this time my outlook had completely changed – I was ready to consider new treatment options instead of just feeling despondent. I’d started to believe that something could work. The staff were great – they didn’t just see my condition, they saw the whole of me. They tried me on a biologic therapy and I remember thinking to myself: I’m not going to let psoriasis control me anymore.
Within weeks, every patch on my body had cleared up.
Now I feel like a new person. I’m happier, more confident, I can take my son swimming and wear summer dresses, without covering up, for the first time in my life! Without attending the Shout Out, I don’t think I would have tried a new medication. That’s why I’m now a Shout Out ambassador. I want to give others hope and maybe even change their lives too.
