Professor Gillian Wallis

Education & Training

Gillian studied for her BSc Microbiology and Chemistry at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and continued with a BSc (Hons) in Microbial Genetics and then a PhD in Human Genetics, also at UCT. She also has an MA in Healthcare Ethics and Law from the University of Manchester. During her career Gillian has also spent time at ETH in Zurich and the University of Washington, Seattle. In 2008 she was appointed Professor of Genetics, Joint Appointment, Faculty of Life Sciences and the School of Translational Medicine, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester. Since 2007 Gillian has also been Associate Dean for Postgraduate Education for the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences with esponsibility for all postgraduate activity across the nine Schools within the Faculty including approximately 1500 PGT (engaged in 33 PGT programmes) and 700 PGR students. She is also the Governor (University nominated) to the Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she chairs the Staff Health and Wellbeing Working Group.

The ASLs take responsibility for the clinical, enabling and education and training themes that are core to delivering the MAHSC strategy and realising the vision “to be a leading global centre for the delivery of innovative applied health research and education into healthcare”. Their remit covers the entire spectrum of activity from ‘molecule to metropolis’, embracing laboratory discovery through to service innovation in the community. Gillian’s role will focus particularly on postgraduate education and workforce development.
